How To Prep A Football

When was the last time you prepped your football? It’s time to get all of your equipment ready so you can be prepared to tackle the remaining season. There are several steps you need to follow to make sure your football is ready to hit the gridiron. Everyone knows there’s nothing quite like throwing around a freshly prepped football. There are specific attributes that any football player can identify, like the smell of the leather and the smooth texture from the conditioner. Keep reading to see the step-by-step process we use at Big Game to keep our football game ready so you can do the same.

The Products

There are four key products you need to prep your football. The first product we recommend is the MOJO Leather Conditioner, a must-have for maintaining the quality of the leather. Other essential products for your football are the Red River Mud and the Football Hand Brush, which must be used when regularly conditioning with MOJO or completing the entire mudding game-prep process. Further accessories you need to complete your maintenance kit are Big Game Ball Wax, and a rag to wipe off any excess product.

The Process

  1. Apply Mud: Use latex gloves to apply a generous amount of Big Game Red River mud to your football. This is the best product for breaking in your new football because it quickly conditions each ball, helping to maximize tack, grip, and the life of game balls.
  2. Massage Leather: Thoroughly massage the mud into the leather for 3-5 minutes to ensure deep penetration. This process will prevent your football from being shiny and slippery so you can capitalize on your best performance.
  3. Let Set: Allow the mud to set on the football for approximately 1 hour. This will allow the mud to lightly break down the top layer of the leather, which improves your grip on the ball.
  4. Wipe-Off Excess: Use a clean towel or rag to wipe off any excess mud from the football.
  5. Brush to Finish: For the perfect finish, use a stiff hand brush or a Power Ball Brush from Big Game to brush the leather to your liking. When used with Football Wax from Big Game, it easily buffs and conditions brand-new footballs to the perfect level of tackiness.
  6. One-Time Application: No need to re-apply mud after initial treatment.
  7. Maintain Quality: Use Mojo Conditioning regularly to maintain the desired feel and performance of your football.

Football maintenance is essential if you want yours to last. Following these simple steps will ensure your football feels its best for the longest amount of time. Visit our website to view or purchase any of our accessories listed above, as well as other essentials to keep you ready all season.
